YouRTI.in

Making access to information simpler, safer, and more accessible.

Timeline: 2018 – OngoingLocation: Across India (Digital Platform)

Context:Access to information is fundamental to democratic participation and accountability. However, filing Right to Information (RTI) applications can often be confusing, inaccessible, or intimidating—particularly for individuals unfamiliar with legal procedures or government systems. Concerns around anonymity, accessibility, and follow-up processes also discourage many from seeking information.

Project Approach:YouRTI.in was developed as a technology-enabled platform that simplifies the RTI filing process for individuals, organisations, and institutions. By reducing procedural barriers and improving accessibility, the platform supports greater public engagement with transparency and accountability mechanisms.

Simplifying the Right to Information:

  • Enabling users to file RTI applications online through a simple interface
  • Supporting anonymous filings where required
  • Routing applications to the appropriate public authorities
  • Tracking requests and follow-ups until responses are received
  • Creating a publicly accessible archive of RTI applications and responses
  • Building an open-source, scalable platform for civic access and transparency

Key Learnings:

  • Many people are unaware of how to effectively use RTI systems
  • Simpler digital processes significantly improve accessibility and participation
  • Anonymity can encourage individuals to seek information more confidently
  • Public access to RTI responses helps strengthen collective knowledge and accountability

Why This Matters: Transparent governance depends on accessible information systems. By simplifying RTI access, YouRTI.in strengthens democratic participation and enables individuals to engage more confidently with public institutions.
