Digital Budget Rani — The Next Stage in Women’s Financial Inclusion

Bridging the digital divide through community-led financial literacy and digital access.

Timeline: 2023 – 2025 | Location: Hyderabad & Visakhapatnam

Context:

As banking and financial systems rapidly move online, digital access has become essential for economic participation. Yet many women from low-income households remain excluded due to limited access to technology, low digital literacy, and dependence on others for financial transactions. This growing digital divide increases vulnerability and limits women’s financial independence and decision-making.

Project Approach:

Building on the learnings of Budget Rani, Digital Budget Rani focuses on practical, community-led digital financial inclusion. Instead of assuming access to smartphones or internet connectivity, the programme works with the technology women already have access to — including feature phones — making digital payments and banking systems more accessible, usable, and trustworthy.

Turning Digital Access into Financial Confidence:

  • Trained 60 community facilitators known as Digital Budget Ranis in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam
  • Conducted workshops on UPI, digital banking, and online financial safety
  • Introduced participants to IVR-based payment systems such as NPCI’s Ultra Cash BHIM
  • Developed multilingual, Telugu-based educational tools using videos and step-by-step learning materials
  • Supported women in learning how to send, receive, and save money digitally
  • Integrated scam awareness and online safety into all training modules

Key Learnings:

  • Digital exclusion is closely linked to confidence, trust, and accessibility
  • Feature-phone-based systems are critical for inclusive digital participation
  • Community-led learning models significantly improve adoption and engagement
  • Women require sustained support and handholding to navigate digital financial systems safely
  • Financial literacy and digital literacy must work together

Why We Think This Matters: As digital transactions become increasingly central to daily life, exclusion from digital systems risks deepening existing inequalities. Digital Budget Rani works to ensure that women are not left behind in this transition by building the confidence, knowledge, and tools needed for safe and independent financial participation.
