Community Health Response During COVID-19

Supporting vulnerable communities through healthcare access, awareness, and emergency response during the pandemic.

Timeline: 2020 – 2022 | Location: Hyderabad

Context:

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and deepened existing inequalities in access to healthcare, information, and essential services. Low-income communities, migrant workers, and vulnerable populations faced heightened risks due to overcrowded living conditions, misinformation, limited healthcare access, and economic instability.

Project Approach:

Yugantar’s pandemic response focused on community-based healthcare support, public awareness, and strengthening access to essential services in underserved areas. Across multiple phases, the project worked closely with Primary Health Centres (PHCs), ASHA workers, and local communities to address immediate health needs while reducing fear, stigma, and barriers to care.

Responding Through Community Care:

  • Conducted public awareness workshops on COVID-19 prevention and safety
  • Distributed medical supplies, masks, and ration support to vulnerable communities
  • Supported PHCs and frontline ASHA workers in affected areas
  • Improved awareness and access to COVID-19 testing services
  • Established ambulance support and tele-consultation facilities during critical periods
  • Organised vaccination camps across 21 low-income communities in Hyderabad
  • Mobilised communities to address vaccine hesitancy and improve participation

Key Learnings:

  • Community trust is essential during public health emergencies
  • Local health workers play a critical role in outreach and mobilisation
  • Misinformation and stigma significantly impact healthcare access
  • Sustained, on-ground engagement improves participation in public health initiatives
  • Health interventions must address both medical and socio-economic realities

Why This Matters: The pandemic highlighted the importance of accessible, community-driven public health systems. Through direct support, awareness-building, and collaboration with frontline workers, the project aimed to strengthen healthcare access and resilience among communities most affected by the crisis.
